“I’m not a morning person.” “I have such a bad memory.” “This is just the way I am.”
Ah the stories we tell ourselves. We all do this. On a daily basis. We tell ourselves things that aren’t really true. We think they’re true. But they’re not.
We tell ourselves these things so we dont have to try. Now, we may not actually believe that that is the reason we are doing this. But what happens when you tell yourself a story?
You get to believe it
You see, the mind is really simple. What you say to it over and over, it will believe. That is why what you’re saying to yourself on a daily basis is so important.
I used to do this all of the time. Tell myself things that weren’t true so that I could stay the same. I would say I wanted to change, but what I was telling myself and what I was doing were not lining up.
For a really long time, I wanted to wake up and have a morning routine. I knew that it would help me get out of the rut that I was in because I knew that what I was doing was not working. But I would tell myself “Im not a morning person” or “its so hard waking up early in the morning.” So I wouldn’t try. My mind just believed that story because I would say it on a consistent basis. And so nothing changed and I stayed them same.
We do this all of the time. In all areas of life. We tell ourselves that there’s no good people left, so we don’t put ourselves out there. We tell ourselves having routines are boring that we like to live life by going with the flow, so nothing gets done that needs to get done. We tell ourselves we don’t have enough time to do XYZ so we don’t do it, but somehow manage to spend an hour on Tik Tok. We tell ourselves that healthy food is basic and that we don’t like water, so we keep eating fast food and drinking sugary drinks. We tell ourselves were too old to take a dance class or too young to be a motivation speaker and so, we dont even try.
And everyday our soul dies a little but more
And then we get angry. We want to blame our circumstances, the people around us, the life that we have. Because if things weren’t Iike this, then we could do whatever it is that we said we wanted to do.
But let’s be real here, if you’re not doing it now. You won’t do it then.
One of the toughest things we have to realize is the reason we are in the position that we are in, is ourselves. And the reason were not doing the things we say we want to do is because we have made up stories about them. And we stick to the stories no matter what. And if someone comes in and tries to show you how its not true, your brain come up with 50 different reasons as to why it is.
Because that is what you have been telling it. And so its has all of these years to gather this evidence, as to why you can’t do something. About who we are. About why we can’t do this thing. It’s so wrapped up in our identity.
But deep down, you know you want this thing. You just feel like you don’t know how to get there.
It’s starts with changing the stories we have been telling ourselves.
What do you want to believe about XYZ, even if you don’t believe it right now? How can you start reminding yourself of that everyday? Write it down, read it over and over again. Memorize it. Record yourself saying this new belief and listen to it while you’re driving. While you’re cleaning the house. While you’re getting ready. Make it a mantra.
Eventually, your brain will have heard it so much, it starts to develop a new story. And with this new belief (thats really what a belief is, a story we tell ourselves.) It will start looking for evidence on how this real or how it can make it real. It will start to look for opportunities to make this become a reality. Now its up to you to jump on those opportunities and take action.
And as you keep telling yourself this story, it will become a part of your new identity. And you will look back and be proud that you started showing up for yourself and that you have these new supportive thoughts to get you to where you want to be.
I know that making changes are hard. And sometimes theres something deeper. A bigger block that is getting in the way of us taking action. If you’ve been wanting to change your story, but you know you need support through it, lets hop on a call!
